San Damiano Retreat Center

We visited the San Damiano Retreat Center on August 7, 2010, not knowing what to expect, but we were unable to find another place to spend the night for our trip to the area. We were so thankful to have discovered this place. We are not Catholic, but no religion was mentioned while we were there, and we throughly enjoyed exploring the grounds under the context of our own Christianity. The back side of the cabin literally was on the bluff on the banks of the Ohio River which a vast beautiful view right from the back porch. There was a jet tub which we enjoyed. The cabin inside was not luxurious by any means, being basic yet clean, and we were content with that for the cost. We enjoyed the grounds and even walking down to the dock on the river for a little sunbathing. I did get in the water for a short bit, but it was rather intimidating being such a large river and knowing how undercurrents can be, but it was obvious other people must swim a bit here. We had decided we would certainly come back if we had the chance to, but so far we have not and here is is thirteen years later. We were told it was fortunate that we found a weekend that they were not booked up with a group retreat. There was a few other folks present in other cabins, but all was very quite and peaceful which was just what we needed. The Center is located at 31 San Damiano Road, Golconda, Illinois. I felt intimdiated calling them to reserve a place, but there was really no reason to be so.

These are some of the photos in the above video slideshow, but only a select few.

See the flowering vine growing up the bluff?
