Canna x generalis | Canna, Canna Lily, Indian Shot, Achira
Cannaceae (Canna Family) Pronounced KAN-aye-see-eye
KAN-uh by Jen-er-RAL-liss
The name "Canna" is from the Greek word "Kanna" meaning reed-like (aka cane).
These plants are a rhizome and spread that way.
The plant grows six feet tall.
The plant loves the sun.
People like to grow these plants as a privacy wall.
I have never been a fan of cannas, but hubby seems to love them. We received some free during the Ste. Genevieve garden walk one year, planted them, they bloomed, were dug up, and were not replanted the next year. I was not disappointed. We were told by many people that they did not need to be dug up and replanted each year. Even hubby said his Grandma had them and never dug them up ages ago.
I had some years ago before the back garden area was built and would dig them up and bring them indoors and replant them the next year. I never liked them then either. They are too tall and the majority of the plant is stem and foliage. They are too much bulk for the bang.
