Gerbera jamesonii | Gerber Daisy, African Daisy, Transvaal daisy, Barberton daisy
Asteraceae (Daisy and Sunflower Family) (Pronounced ass-ter-AY-see-eye )
Pronounced GUR-bur-uh Jay-mess-OWN-ee-eye (probably not JAYM-sun-eye)
The name "Gerbera" honors a German naturalist names Traugott Gerber who died in 1743.
The name "Barberton" references the town in West Africa where this flower is native.
The name "Jamesonii" honors Robert Jameson who first collected the flower in West Africa.
This plant is an annual, but I just love it in my garden. It really stands out and catches the eye.
The plant loves the warm sun.
Deadhead the flowers for appearance.
Blooms follow the sun, just like a sunflower.
I like the single variety, but there are semi-double varieties.
There are many hybrid cultivars of this flower. I like the lovely dark pink ones.
---I know I have lots of photos of these, but I must not have dug them out. I will be buying more as I always do and I love them!
