Lilium Asiatic hybrids (formerly Lilium asiatica) | Asiatic Lily

Liliaceae (Lily Family) (Pronounced Lil-ee-a-see-eye)

Pronounced Lil-ee-um  Aye-zhee-at-tik

The Asiatic Lily is the "true lily" which is different from the daylily.

The Asiatic Lily has one strong tall stem and the flowers bloom out around the stem. That is, it has a spiral unbranched stem.  The daylily has grass-like foliage.

The blooms come in many colors that are all bright and cheerful. There are six petals.

The plant likes full sun.

After blooming, I cut the stem back about half way so it does not look so bad in the garden and it comes back faithfully year after year. As in all bulbs, the green needs to die back so the nutrients go back into the bulb, but it does not seem to harm it to cut it back by half and to let it die back thereafter. It is really an easy plant to grow with low maintenance.

The Oriental Lily is similar, but it blooms in late Summer, is fragrant, and is taller; the Asiatic Lily blooms in late Spring and early Summer and has no fragrance. The common pink "Stargazer" is an Oriental Lily. I think I had the Stargazer variety long ago as I have photos below in 2001 through 2011.

I have seen Lilium auratum listed for Asiatic Lily, but it seems to be the Golden-ray Lily in Division IX.

Lily Divisions (or classifications)

1. Asiatic Hybrids – Popular; least expensive; wide variety; easy to grow; colorful; unscented

2. Martagon Hybrids – Shade tolerate; expensive; Turscap Lily

3. Candidum | Euro-Caucasian Hybrid – Heirlooms; Madonna Lily

4. American Hybrids – Downward-facing petals; naturalize easily; Lilium lancifolium or Lilium tigrinum

5. Longiflorum Hybrids – Easter Lily

6. Trumpet and Aurelian Hybrids – Bugle-shaped flowers; Tall; needs staking

7. Oriental Hybrids – Similar to Asiatic; needs acidic soil; sweet fragrance; famous Stargazer lily; L. auratum and L. speciosum

8. Interdivisional Hybrids – catch-all group; crossings of other divisions;

9. Species (true) – wild; not hybridized

I believe this one is an oriental lily, pink "stargazer," which is different than an asciatic lily, but they are both true lilies.
